4 Myths About Small Business Marketing

Kimberly Bonilla • March 3, 2020

There are many myths that may lead small business owners to believe that marketing online or starting a website for their business is unnecessary. Many times you might think that website is not relevant to your business/ industry. However, its important to remember that there are thousands of companies whose growth is due to digital marketing. To reject these common myths, here are 4 of the most beliefs about marketing.

1. Digital Marketing Is Only For Big Businesses

You don’t need a big business to start digital marketing. Since almost all age groups, communities and demographics have social media accounts, marketing online is a great tool to get ahead with local competition. Studies have shown that over 70-80% of people will research a company on the web before making a purchase decision. If your small business is not on the digital stream, it will not visible online and will not experience growth.

2. You Need to be on Every Social Media Platform

This is further from the truth. In order to reach your audience it’s essential to ask yourself questions like: Who are the people you are trying to reach? How can you reach them? Considering that each social media platform has a connection with select communities, it allows you to mainly focus on specific social media sites that target the consumers expected to buy your product. If you use every platform, you are perhaps targeting the people who are not interested in your product at all.

3. You Don’t Need a Website Because You Don’t Sell Online

A website will never not be relevant to your business, even if you don’t sell online. The cost of not having a website is much higher than the cost of building a website. Considering that 40 percent of small businesses do not have a website, it becomes difficult for customers to learn about what your business offers. Moreover, its the only way google will ever tell people that your small business actually exists. The fact that 40 percent of small businesses don’t have a website, could also potentially give you an advantage with the market, if you do.

4. You Already Have Plenty of Loyal Customers Without Using the Internet

That great! However, to continue having a long list of customers, it important for your small business to look to expand in the future. Thinking about the future is one of the best ways to keep track of your long terms goals. It’s not 100 percent certain the long list of customers you have now will never run out, that is why planning for the growth of your business and its future progress is key to consider.
